NMMI Celebrates Founders Day
The New Mexico Military Institute’s Founders Day held on September 3rd was a powerful tribute to the vision of Joseph C. Lea and Robert S. Goss, whose dream in 1891 established an institution dedicated to developing intellect, character, leadership, and opportunity. As we celebrated the 135th Anniversary of New Mexico Military Institute, we honored a legacy that has endured for generations and continues to shape lives around the world today.
Founders Day demonstrated exactly what makes NMMI special. It brought together cadets, faculty, staff, alumni, families, community members, and supporters in a shared celebration of our history, our mission, and our future. Most importantly, it reminded us that NMMI’s enduring values of Duty, Honor, and Achievement are just as relevant today as they were when our school was founded.
Much appreciation is extended to LTC Duran and the Regimental Staff, LTC Ward, LTC Harness, the Commandant’s Staff, SROTC/JROTC, MARCOM, Tier I leaders, faculty, staff, and the Corps of Cadets for the countless hours of planning, preparation, coordination, and execution that made this inaugural celebration such a success. Their dedication transformed an idea into a memorable experience that honored NMMI’s past while inspiring NMMI’s future.
A special thank you goes to the outstanding SODEXO team, whose professionalism and hard work ensured that participants, guests, and visitors were welcomed with exceptional hospitality throughout the day. The meals and refreshments they prepared contributed greatly to the overall success and spirit of the celebration.
NMMI would also like to recognize the Roswell community and Army National Guard brethren for their participation, support, and commitment to helping us showcase the important role NMMI continues to play in developing leaders of character. These partnerships strengthen this institution and reinforce the strong connection between NMMI and the communities we serve.
An important part of Founders Day was welcoming future generations of learners to the NMMI campus. NMMI was honored to host students from Sydney Gutierrez Middle School, Military Heights Elementary School, as well as NMMI IPA 8th Grade students. Their presence reminded us that NMMI’s mission is not only to develop today’s cadets but also to inspire tomorrow’s leaders. One comment from an IPA eighth-grade student captured the spirit of the day perfectly: “That was so cool. I’m going to go to NMMI.” There is no greater affirmation of the Institute’s efforts than seeing young people inspired by what they witnessed on the NMMI campus. Their interaction with NMMI cadets and exposure to NMMI culture, traditions, and values demonstrated the lasting impact NMMI can have on future generations.

Congratulations to the cadets and leadership of Echo Troop for earning the inaugural Founders Day Streamer. In recognition of this accomplishment, Echo Troop leadership will receive a special coin presentation.
Most importantly, Founders Day was an event where everyone won. NMMI honored the original founders, celebrated 135 years of excellence, showcased the remarkable talents of NMMI cadets, welcomed future students to campus, strengthened community relationships, highlighted NMMI’s partnership with the Army National Guard, and reaffirmed the values that have guided this institution since 1891. It was a day filled with pride, competition, fellowship, learning, and shared purpose.
One hundred thirty-five years ago, Joseph Lea and Robert Goss envisioned an institution that would develop leaders of character and create opportunities for young people seeking a better future. This Founders Day celebration demonstrated that their vision remains alive and well. New Mexico Military Institute honored their legacy while ensuring that the light they ignited continues to shine brightly for generations to come.
