Announcement of New Commandant of Cadets
New Mexico Military Institute is pleased to announce the selection of Colonel Steven Kobayashi as the next Commandant of Cadets at New Mexico Military Institute.
Colonel Kobayashi brings more than 27 years of distinguished military service, leadership, training, and educational experience to NMMI. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation as a disciplined and principled leader who develops organizations founded on accountability, professionalism, and excellence. His extensive background in leadership development, academic oversight, training management, organizational readiness, and professional education makes him uniquely qualified to guide and mentor the Corps of Cadets.
Most recently, Colonel Kobayashi served with the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, where he led a multinational directorate representing 32 nations. In this demanding international assignment, he strengthened professional development programs, improved organizational performance, and fostered a culture of accountability and excellence among allied forces. Prior to that assignment, he served as the Director for Intelligence and Security (G2/J2) for the Georgia National Guard, providing senior-level leadership and oversight for training, readiness, standards, and professional development across the organization.
His leadership experience also includes command of the 1st Battalion, 122nd Regiment (Regional Training Institute), where he directed military education and training programs while achieving a remarkable 99.98% TRADOC accreditation score, the highest recorded by the Intelligence Center of Excellence at that time. During his command, he led a faculty of instructors, ensured curriculum quality, emphasized professional development, and maintained the highest standards of academic rigor, discipline, and student success.
Colonel Kobayashi’s academic credentials reflect his lifelong commitment to learning and leader development. He holds a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership from Liberty University, a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership from Webster University, a Bachelor of Arts in University Studies from the University of New Mexico, and an Associate of Arts degree from New Mexico Military Institute. His professional military education includes completion of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer Course, the U.S. Air Force Air Command and Staff College, and advanced strategic planning studies. He is currently completing studies for a Master’s Degree through the Air War College, further expanding his preparation for senior leadership responsibilities.
His distinguished service has been recognized through numerous military awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, NATO Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two awards, Meritorious Service Medal with three awards, and the Army Commendation Medal with four awards. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Military Intelligence Corps Knowlton Award and the Order of Saint Barbara, honors that reflect exceptional contributions to military intelligence, leadership, and service to the profession of arms.
What makes this appointment especially meaningful is that Colonel Kobayashi is an alumnus of New Mexico Military Institute. He understands firsthand the traditions, values, and transformational experiences that define NMMI. He returns not only as an accomplished senior military leader but as a graduate who once sat in the classrooms, marched on the Parade Field, and benefited from the very leadership development system he will now help oversee.
As Commandant, Colonel Kobayashi will play a critical role in developing the next generation of citizen-scholars and leaders of character. His experience, professionalism, and commitment to mentorship will provide our cadets with an exceptional role model. He embodies the values of Duty, Honor, and Achievement that have guided this institution for more than 135 years.
Colonel Kobayashi is anticipated to join the NMMI family in the September timeframe, and we look forward to welcoming him to campus for an introductory visit before he officially assumes his duties. This visit will provide an opportunity for him to reconnect with his alma mater and begin building relationships with the cadets, faculty, staff, alumni, and stakeholders he will soon serve.
