Special Pathways for Military-Minded Students

Early Commissioning Program (ROTC)

Our Army ROTC Early Commissioning Program (ECP) allows qualified junior college cadets to earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in just two years—half the time of a traditional four-year program. Cadets can then serve in the National Guard or Reserve while completing their bachelor’s degree. This fast-track option provides leadership experience, tuition assistance, and a clear path to a military career.

Service Academy Preparatory Program

Through our Service Academy Preparatory Program, students receive intensive academic, physical, and leadership preparation to secure appointments to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, and other service academies. With a proven track record of appointments each year, NMMI is a trusted launchpad for future officers

Military Family In-State Tuition Rate

The NMMI Board of Regents has approved in-state tuition rates for out-of-state military families. This benefit applies to:

  • Active duty U.S. Armed Forces members and their dependents
  • Honorably discharged veterans and their dependents

New Mexico Residents Zero-Cost Options

A college education or high school experience doesn’t have to come with overwhelming costs—especially for New Mexico residents. Many students qualify for tuition assistance that covers most, if not all, of their educational expenses.

At NMMI, qualified New Mexico high school students can now attend tuition-free through the General Richard T. Knowles Legislative Scholarship. This scholarship covers the remaining balance needed for the 2026–2027 academic year after all other scholarships are applied.

Award amounts are customized based on each student’s financial need and available aid. To qualify, new cadets must have at least a 2.0 GPA, and returning cadets must maintain a 2.0 GPA and a “C” or higher in deportment (corps grade). All applicants must complete the Legislative Scholarship application.

El Paso, TX Residents

El Paso, Texas, residents qualify for a variety of financial aid assistance and scholarships as well as a reduced, New Mexico In-State tuition rate while attending NMMI. An abundance of Texas resident specific scholarships are available as well. The breakdown of costs for attending NMMI can be found on our Costs Sheets.

All junior college level students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Families are often surprised to learn the student may qualify for more preferable aid programs by completing the FAFSA.
