Roswell Students Win National Science Bowl® Regional Competition, Secure Spot in National Finals

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A team of high school students from Roswell, New Mexico won their regional competition for the 2025 National Science Bowl® (NSB) this month and will compete in the NSB National Finals this spring, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), who sponsors the NSB, announced today.

“Now in its 35th year, the National Science Bowl® brings together the most exceptional young minds from across America with science, technology, and math,” said Harriet Kung, Acting Director of the DOE Office of Science, “and I am honored to congratulate New Mexico Military Institute team as they advance to the National Finals! Continue to believe in yourselves and your knowledge as you compete for the title of champion, good luck!”

The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. More information about the date and location of specific regionals can be found on the NSB Homepage.

The team from your area that won their qualifying regional competition this past weekend and will be advancing to the National Finals is:

New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, New Mexico

The winning team from each of the 46 middle- and 64 high-school regionals will compete in the National Finals, held in Washington, D.C. from April 24th to April 28th, 2025. The national event consists of several days of science activities and sightseeing, along with the competitions. For press inquiries and team information, please contact the NSB media manager, Nathan Clark, at nathan.clark@science.doe.gov.

The top two middle and high school teams will win $5000 for their schools’ math and science departments. Other schools placed in the top 16 in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments.

The 2025 competitors will follow in the footsteps of previous National Science Bowl® contestants and will blaze a trail for students in science, math, and engineering.

Approximately 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® in its 34-year history. Each year, more than 10,000 students compete in the NSB. Each team is composed of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The competition tests the students on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The Department of Energy Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl® and sponsors the finals competition.

DOE’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit the DOE Office of Science homepage.
