NMMI Cadets Witness Human Autopsy
NMMI cadets recently gained a rare and invaluable educational experience as they observed a human autopsy at the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) at the University of New Mexico.
On March 26, cadets enrolled in Forensic Science and Human Anatomy classes visited the OMI facility where they were given the opportunity to witness firsthand how forensic professionals conduct autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death. The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of real-world applications of their academic studies.
During the tour, cadets observed the systematic process used by medical investigators, including external and internal examinations of human cadavers, documentation, and evidence collection. The experience reinforced classroom concepts related to human anatomy, pathology, and forensic death investigation, while also emphasizing professionalism, ethics, and respect for the deceased.
Cadets reported that the experience was both impactful and educational, offering insight into potential career paths in forensic science, medicine, and related disciplines.
The tour is part of the effort of NMMI to provide the cadets with the best possible learning experience. The institute hopes to continue this partnership and incorporate similar educational tours into the curriculum for future forensic science and pre-med students.
