How to Prepare for Life as a Recruit at NMMI

If you’re reading this during the summer before your arrival at NMMI, now is the perfect time to start preparing. Your success at NMMI will depend on both your physical fitness and academic readiness, so taking proactive steps now can set you apart from your fellow recruits.
Physical Preparation
Physical fitness is a crucial aspect of life at NMMI. If you’re not already exercising regularly, start incorporating a routine that includes push-ups, sit-ups, and running. Being physically prepared will not only make daily life easier but also set you apart from other recruits. A solid foundation in physical fitness will help you meet the physical demands of training and give you a competitive edge.
Academic Readiness
Academics play a significant role in your experience at NMMI. If you have extra time during the summer, use it to strengthen your academic skills—especially in math. Mathematics can be challenging at NMMI, and many science courses require a solid math foundation. The higher the level of math you place into, the better it will be for your academic progress. However, if you don’t place into an advanced math course initially, don’t worry—NMMI provides opportunities to improve, including challenge exams and options to take courses during summer or winter breaks. The key is to stay proactive and take advantage of these opportunities.
Military Preparation
Familiarizing yourself with the military aspects of NMMI before arriving can give you a head start. A great resource is the Blue Book, which is available on the NMMI website. Try to memorize the Goss Quote, General Orders, and NMMI songs over the summer—this will significantly ease your recruit training experience. When your cadre (upper-class cadets who train recruits) see that you already know these fundamentals, they can focus on teaching you more advanced skills instead of reviewing the basics.
Additionally, watching YouTube videos on Army positions of attention and parade rest can be beneficial. While you won’t be expected to know how to march or perform facing movements perfectly, having some familiarity with these basics will put you ahead of many other recruits from day one.
Scholar’s Program Opportunity
If you’re coming to NMMI as a high school freshman, consider applying for the Scholar’s Program. This program allows you to take Sophomore English during the summer after your first year, enabling you to graduate with both your high school diploma and an associate’s degree with less effort compared to taking all courses during the regular semesters. Of course, maintaining strong academic performance is key to qualifying for this opportunity.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for life at NMMI doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By focusing on your physical fitness, academic readiness, and military knowledge, you can make your transition smoother and position yourself as one of the top recruits in your class. Take advantage of the summer to build good habits, and you’ll be setting yourself up for success from the moment you arrive on campus.

Welcome to NMMI—your journey starts now!

Respectfully,
C/MAJ Victor Barbosa
