In Saturday’s title game of the 20th Annual Hal Bogle Classic, NMMI downed the tournament host Demons, 14-0, with hot bats and overpowering pitching.
The Colts jumped out in front with a six-run tally in the top of the first, sparked by a lead-off triple by senior shortstop Francisco Rivera, and a few plate appearances later, a three-run homerun by junior second baseman Alejandro Lopez; then extended their lead with four more runs in the top of the second.
On the mound, senior pitcher Gavin Maloney was almost unhittable. He got the complete-game win, allowing just one hit and one walk over five innings, while amassing 11 strikeouts.
Maloney, Lopez, and sophomore catcher Andres Bleizeffer all had multiple hits for the Colts in the contest. Maloney was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored; Lopez was 3-for-3 with a double and a dinger, five RBIs and two runs; and Bleizeffer was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Three Institute players made the All-Tournament team: Maloney was selected as the tournament MVP, along with Rivera, and senior outfielder and pitcher Connor Roe.
The Bogle championship win puts the Colts’ record at 7-0 on the season. They’ll face Demons again in Dexter at 4 pm on Tuesday, March 20, then host the 24th Annual Colt-Sertoma Classic on Mar. 22-24. All games in this tournament will be held at the NMMI Ballpark, with the Colts’ first game slated for 7 pm on Thursday vs. Tularosa.
