The Colt boys tennis team got their second victory of the season Saturday, taking the title at the Coyote Classic by a big margin. And while the girls finished fifth, there were only five points separating the second and fifth finishers.
“Overall it’s been a really good weekend for the boys and the girls,” said coach Will Cavin. “Both of them have been successful. They’re both climbing the ladder and headed in the right direction, so I’m really pleased with their progress and where they’re headed.”
In the bracketed tournament, Saturday was doubles play, and while the boys didn’t have to do much to win, they still earned first, third and consolation championship titles to wrap up the bracketed tourney by 20 points over Lovington, which finished second over Artesia in a Flight 3 tiebreaker.
The Colt boys were missing several players who had to take the ACT test, but everyone stepped up.

Flor Toscano looks to see if the ball stays in bounds after jumping to try and return a high lob shot.
Playing at Flight 1, Francisco Saracho and Luis Fontes had to battle back vs. Lovington brothers Christian and Jace Crawford, losing the first set 2-6, then winning 6-4 and 10-7.
Spencer Treat and Felix Higuera lost their first round in Flight 2, but won their next two matches to get the consolation title, and Ignacio Ongay and Sebastian Aguirre, playing together in Flight 3, finished third after a second match loss to Artesia.
Megan Lynch teamed up with JinXiu Dong to get the Flight 1 girls title, while Savannah Lee and Claudia Gerhardus finished fourth in Flight 2 and Flor Toscano and Sofia Brassea fourth in Flight 3.
“Megan had a good weekend,” Cavin said. “She finished first in her singles and her doubles with Miss Jin Dong, so they did good. So I’m excited for the kids. They’re all doing really well, and in particular for the girls, they’re improving. So it’s been a good weekend for them.”
Next week will be a busy one for the Colts, as they’ll host Goddard in a dual match Tuesday; Piedra Vista in a Thursday dual; then compete Friday and Saturday in the Roswell Invitational against 6A Cleveland, Farmington and Piedra Vista.
“We’ll have a pretty good tournament next weekend,” Cavin said. “Then on March 15 we’ll get a couple of players back who should really solidify us. We’ve already got a solid team, but it’s going to make us even more fierce. More competitive. So we’re going to be in good shape.”
