HOBBS — The Colt swim team had a successful day in their opening meet Saturday. Competing at the small but competitive Tori’s Meet in Hobbs, the NMMI boys came home with two bronze medals, a silver, and a fourth place, as well as competing in two relays.
“Everyone swam well today,” said coach Jan Olesinski. “It wasn’t a big meet, but Jeremy (Torres) was second and third in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and Donovan (Cuellar) was second in the 100-fly. That was good for kids who’ve only been swimming for one week.”
Freshman Jeremy Pinon also added points, finishing fourth in the 200-meter freestyle.
With eight boys, Olesinski also put together two relays — the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle. And while they didn’t finish in the top three, they’ll be trying to improve on those times to qualify for state as the season goes on.
The only Lady Colt competing was Brooke Morgan in the 50-meter free.
And NMMI was by far the smallest team at the meet, which included 6A teams Hobbs and Carlsbad; 5A Artesia and Alamogordo; and three teams from Texas.
‘“Everybody had a good time and we competed well,” Olesinski said. “It showed them that they can compete, even if they are beginner swimmers.”
NMMI will be back in action Jan. 14 at the prestigious Academy Invitational in Albuquerque.
