The Colt baseball team picked up their second win of the week against Santa Rosa in the semifinal round of the Colt-Sertoma Classic 10-1 on Friday night.
Rivera led the Colts to victory on the pitcher’s mound. Despite having the bases loaded with Lions in the first and second inning, he only allowed two hits for the remainder of the game.
He gave up five hits, one run over six and a third innings and struck out ten. Luke Taylor threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
“It was very obvious that Francisco struggled at the beginning of the game,” said head Coach Charlie Ward. “He sped the game up and ended up pitching a good game.”
NMMI came alive offensively and put an eight spot up in the fourth inning thanks to singles by Martin Ayon, Alejandro Barcenas, Alejandro Lopez, and Andres Bleizeffer.
Ayon had a monster night at the plate going 4-4 with four singles, two runs scored and one RBI.
“We had a lot of good situational hitting,” said Ward. “Now we are in the championship game and that is all we can ask of our kids.”
NMMI takes on the defending Colt-Sertoma Classic and 3A State Champions, Texico Wolverines.
“Texico is legit”, said Ward. “They have outstanding pitching and only lost one player from their 2017 state championship team.”
First pitch is at 7:00 PM at the NMMI Ballpark.
