After Friday’s excitement on the NMMI tennis courts, Day 2 at the Roswell Invitational was a bit anticlimactic, with the Colt boys getting an easy 9-0 victory over Roswell to take third place. But coach Will Cavin would have been happier had his team been playing for first.
“We just didn’t close the door yesterday,” he said. “Piedra Vista ended up losing to Farmington today 5-4, so I think that if we’d gotten it done yesterday, we’d have been right there with Farmington.”
The Coyotes “came out and competed” and, Cavin said, “it was a decent day,” but with new players joining the team, he’s looking forward to even bigger things.
“We’ve got a great team and we’re fixing to have an unbelievable team with the kids who are coming off of academic probation,” he said. “When we go to play Artesia, I think we’re going to be tough. There’s just no ifs, ands or buts. Like I said, we’re tough now, but we’re going to be really tough. So I’m looking forward to the second half of the season, as I would call it.”
The Lady Colts were playing for the consolation title vs. 6A Cleveland, and besides having to move to the Roswell High Courts, they also had to contend with some unexpected complications.
“The wind blowing, allergies, illnesses. It was kind of one of those days that you just go ahead and do a little bit of experimenting,” Cavin said. “So we moved people around the lineup. Changed our doubles lineup a little bit. If there’s a good time of year to do those things, it’s right now.”
Megan Lynch didn’t even play, ceding the No. 1 singles match, then Cavin put Miranda Nepip at No. 2 and teamed her with Lynch for No. 1 doubles which ended up close, but on the losing side for NMMI.
JinXiu Dong got the lone Institute victory at No. 3 singles, battling to three sets.
“She fought,” Cavin said. “She lost the first set; won the second set; then won the super tie breaker. So that was really awesome. Really happy for all the kids. And once again, we’re headed in the right direction.”
The Colts head out for their first road match of the season Tuesday. They’ll face Artesia on the Bulldog courts before coming back a week later for another dual against Roswell.
