New Mexico Military Institute’s Colt and Lady Colt tennis were in Albuquerque last week, competing at the NMAA’s Class 1A-4A State Tennis Championships.
The Colts took home the second-place trophy in the team championships, held primarily at the tennis courts on the Albuquerque Academy campus.
Second-ranked NMMI blanked Belen High School in the opening round on Friday, May 10, then, after a rain delay pushed back their semifinal match, served-up a loss to No. 6 St. Pius on Saturday. The Institute fell in the championship match against No. 1 Albuquerque Academy.
The individual championships for singles and doubles took place at the Jerry Cline Tennis Facility on Wednesday and Thursday, May 8-9.
Senior Eliana Ward represented NMMI in the girls’ singles bracket. After splitting the few two sets, she lost a very close match in the first round in a super-tiebreaker third set.
Sophomore Morgan Lynch and senior Delinda Moore earned NMMI’s selection for girls’ doubles. They also fell in the first round.
In boys’ singles, NMMI had two selections. Sophomore Hugo Inzunza won his opening-round match in two straight sets, then fell to the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Alejandro Terminel was defeated in the first round, but did manage to win one of the three sets against his opponent.
Junior John McIntyre and sophomore Ricardo Espinoza earned the No. 4 seed in the boys’ doubles bracket. They won their opening match, then lost in the quarters.
