The Colts opened their golf season with the NMMI Junior Varsity Invitational Friday, and while scores weren’t officially posted nor team finishes kept, Institute golf coach Crae Fields said his inexperienced players did well.
“Everyone’s coming in with a good attitude and at this level that’s the main thing that matters,” Field’s said. “Golf’s hard enough, as everybody knows, and shooting over 100 adds a little insult to injury. My job with these JV guys is to make sure they continue to play and continue to get better, so if I post a score of 100 and whatever, that’s just not good for anybody’s psyche.”
Fields used the tournament as a chance for the younger golfers to see competition, which Friday comprised teams from Roswell, Goddard, Dexter, Artesia, Alamogordo, Carlsbad and Hobbs.
Ten Colts competed against the 3A to 6A schools, including Nicolas Ashmore, Ben Clemens, Jason DeNio, Samuel Grajeda, Ryan Houston, John Liakos, Cole Lindsey, Francisco Rodriguez and Louis Villanueva.
The Colt varsity will kick of their season March 24 with the Alien 8, another home meet.
