The Colt boys tennis team got a sweep in a dual match Tuesday, downing Goddard 9-0 on the Gene Hardman Courts. And while Megan Lynch was the only Lady Colt to bring home victories — winning her No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with JinXiu Dong — the girls get better every match.
“The boys played good today,” said coach Will Cavin. “The No. 1 doubles for Goddard gave them a battle, but the boys have done well and I look forward to them continuing to improve.”
Matt Elwell and Leo Melendez were the Rocket doubles team that took several sets from Francisco Saracho and Luis Fontes, but the NMMI pair won 6-2, 6-3.
The closest match of the day was at the girls No. 2 singles, where Dong battled Noor Osmani to the wire, finally falling 7-6, 6-4.
Dong also helped Lynch get a doubles win over Alex Casario and Calli Maguire, and Cavin said his sophomore No. 2 has come a long way.
“Jin has really improved over the last six months, so I’m really excited for her,” he said. “Not to say that the others haven’t been improving, but Jin has improved more than the others, so she’s doing really good.”
As far as the rest of the team, “It’s a work in progress,” the coach said. “These guys, they just keep on improving and getting better. So I think as we move along and get into April we’re going to be pretty good.”
The Colts will get their toughest test of the young season Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thursday, both squads will host tough 5A Piedra Vista in a dual match. At the dual-match Roswell Invitational that begins Friday, the boys will take on 6A Cleveland and the girls 5A Farmington.. The tourney also features PV, Lovington, Goddard and host Roswell.
