NMMI was 180 feet away from completing the series sweep against conference foe Clarendon, but dropped the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader to the Bulldogs.
The Broncs had to come back for the win in the opener. After trailing 9-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, NMMI plated a pair of runs off a 2-run homer by Julian Galindo to make it 9-3.
A huge six-run seventh paved the way to an 11-10 walk-off win. Paulo Rodriguez blasted a three-run shot over the batter’s eye in right center to tie the game at 10s.
In Sunday’s second game, NMMI’s six-spot came during their very first at-bat, giving them an early lead, which they held until the top of the seventh. The Broncos had three doubles, three singles and a pair of walks during the initial rally.
Clarendon slowly but steadily worked their way back into the ballgame with two runs in the top of the second, three in the top of the third, one in the top of the sixth, and then two in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead, their first of the game.
In the bottom half of the stanza, NMMI had their chances to tie or even win it with another walk-off. DiLorenzo came in clutch again with another pinch hit single with one on and one out, and Perez Torrez singled to load up the sacks.
But the next two NMMI hitters couldn’t punch a run in; a strikeout and ground out to short ended the game in favor of the opposition, 8-7.
NMMI took three out of four games against the Bulldogs during the weekend series, as the Broncos bested Clarendon in both contests on Saturday, 6-5 and 2-1.
The Broncos currently have a 24-28 overall record and are 11-21 in the WJCAC. They have one more four-game conference series left in the regular season, against New Mexico Junior College next weekend.
The first two games will be played here at the NMMI Ballpark on Friday, May 3, with first pitch scheduled for 12 P.M. This will also be Sophomore Appreciation Day, with a short ceremony prior to the DH start.
The second two games will be played on Saturday at NMJC’s home field in Hobbs, NM, with the same 12 P.M. expected start time.
