BIG SPRING, Texas — It was another back and forth match for the Bronco basketball team Monday, as they started out their game down 11-0 at Howard College (6-9, 15-13), closed to within five but ended the game down 86-63.
“They shot it very well,” Bronco coach Ralph Davis said of the Hawks. “I think they shot 15-for-23 from 3. We shot .322. It was their sophomore night, so they had a lot of juice.”
Howard went up 11-0 before the Broncos (1-14, 9-19) finally put two into the net. After Howard stretched the lead to 17-2, NMMI slowly fought back, closing to 25-20 before dropping back at the half to trail 42-24.
The Broncos scored the first points of the second half, but after that it was pretty much all Hawks, as they led 64-35 with 10:29 left in the game. NMMI slowly closed the gap, but the margin was too much to overcome.
“They played very well and we just didn’t. It’s as simple as that,” Davis said. “We’re going to keep fighting and finish off strong and try to win the next one and go into the next season with a lot of work to do.”
Nehemiah Mabson led the Bronco scoring with 15 points, and was the only NMMI player in double figures.
Davis credited him and point guard Chaz Lassiter with leading the way.
“I thought Mabson did some things energy-wise,” he said. “Lassiter came in off the bench and did some real good things.”
The Broncos close out the season at home Thursday vs. Midland, with tipoff set for 7 p.m
