RANGER, Texas — The Bronco basketball team is looking forward to coming home after a tough 1-8 road trip to open the season.
After getting their first win Saturday, NMMI fell again Monday, 65-59 to Ranger College (7-0.)
“We’re excited to be home Friday, excited to play our first home game,” said coach Ralph Davis. “This was a tough stretch, every game on the road away from home. But we’re excited to come home to Cahoon Armory playing in our classic Friday and Saturday and go from there.”
All but two of the losses were less than 10-point spreads, with several as close as Monday’s.
“Obviously they’re a tough team,” the coach said. “They went to the final four last year. It’s a quality program where they’re playing real well.”
The biggest problem in Monday’s game was 20 NMMI turnovers.
“It was turnovers that really hurt us,” Davis said. “It was a very physical game for both teams. They play a physical type of defense and keep it low scoring. Any time you’ve got an opportunity to get extra shots you’ve got to do that.”
But while the road trip didn’t help the Bronco record, Davis said there was a positive side to the trips.
“We’ve learned a lot during these games,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of experience playing tough teams. We’re getting better. It’s still a long year left. We’ve just got to keep working toward our first conference game (Nov. 30.)”
After facing the Northern New Mexico JV at 7 p.m. Friday and the Fort Bliss Army Base team at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Bronco Classic Tournament, NMMI will start the conference season back on the road in Borger, Texas, vs. Frank Phillips College.
