LEVELLAND, Texas — For the Bronco basketball team, every game is a different story with the same ending.
Close but no cigar.
“Once again, one possession game,” said coach Ralph Davis.
Playing at the South Plains Tournament in Levelland, Texas, NMMI lost its seventh straight contest, again by just a few points at the end. This time, they fell to Coastal Bend College 76-71.
The teams played close in the first half, but the Broncos trailed 32-28 heading into the locker room. NMMI tied the game with about 45 second remaining in the match, but the Cougars went down and hit a field goal then a free throw to go up by three.
With just a dozen seconds left, the Broncos missed a 3-point shot, fouled, and with Coastal Bend making the free throws, it was a five-point match.
“We’re always in it, which shows you we have the potential, but it’s not realized yet,” Davis said.
And to get the wins, he said, the points have to come throughout the game.
“We’re not losing the games in the closing seconds,” he said. “We’re losing them in the first half or when there’s 17 minutes left in the second. We’ve got to play here, we’ve got to play there. It’s not necessarily the last possession. We’ve got to score so it’s gradual over the course of the game.”
Three Broncos scored in double figures.
Marlon Alcindor led the way with 17, including three 3s. Enoch DeMarco had 15 and Logan Santiago 12.
NMMI has one more tournament game, Saturday, before wrapping up their long road trip vs. Ranger College Monday.
“We’ve got to bounce back,” Davis said. “We’ve got one tomorrow against Collins College. They’re a talented team. We’ve got to take care of it. Our conference is starting up in about 10 days or so and we’ve got to be ready.”
