SNYDER, Texas — Monday, the Bronco basketball team played Western Texas close early in the game, but the Westerners slowly stretched the lead late in the first half, then “came out like gangbusters” to open the second, and that made the big difference in a 99-82 loss in Snyder, Texas.
After trailing big early in the second, NMMI slowly began cutting the deficit.
“Second unit came in and fought hard,” said coach Ralph Davis. “Chancellor Ellis, he shot 6-for-10 from behind the arc. He kind of got back on track as far as making those shots.”
Ellis led the Bronco scoring with 22 points — all but four from the outside — with Nehemiah Mabson tallying 15; DeMarco Enoch 14; and Taylor Breck 13. Breck just missed a double-double, picking up nine rebounds on the night.
With the Broncos (8-16, 0-11) still looking for a conference victory, Davis said battling back is what’s important.
“Right now, we just need to believe that we can turn the corner,” he said. “That what it comes down to. When you get in a hole, it’s like this was what was supposed to happen, when the truth is, you’ve got to keep fighting and keep working. We’ve got the cards stacked against us, but we’re going to keep on trying to operate and get better. I tell them that we have a lot to play for still. We may be eliminated from the playoffs, but truth be told, there’s still much more to play for. They’re playing for the future, so they have to keep that in mind every game we play.”
NMMI will be home Thursday, facing South Plains College in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
