PLANO, Texas — The Bronco tennis teams traveled to Plano, Texas, Friday for the first day of the Collin County Super Six, and facing some tough competition, both the men and the women came away with a split.
Both teams opened the day with victories. The men topped Texas A&M Texarkana 5-4, getting wins from Herman Abban, Noureldin Adam, Tebatibunga Bira, Dave Romero and Abban/Adam in doubles.
“The first one was pretty good for them to pull out a 5-4 win in the first match of the season,” said coach William O’Connell. “They showed great toughness.”
The second match was a lot harder, as the Broncos faced No. 2-ranked Seminole State, falling 8-1 with the only NMMI win coming from Adam at No. 2 singles. Still, O’Connell said the Institute played well.
“A lot of the matches, although NMMI lost, the score doesn’t indicate how tough a lot of the individual matches were.”
Abban and Adam almost came away with a win in doubles, falling 8-5, and in singles, Abban, Adam and BIra were all close.
“It was just they weren’t winning the big points, so on the scoreboard it looked like a 6-2 set, but the games were going back and forth,” O’Connell said. “It was a lot closer than the score would indicate.”
The Lady Broncos also won their opening match, topping North Central Texas College 6-3 for the first time in three years.
“So that was nice to win that,” said Lady Bronco coach Dan O’Connell. “Everybody played well – Thea (Minor) had a real tough match.”
Minor win 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in No. 1 singles, with Francisca Nyarko, Lorraine Banimataku and Lorish Puluspene also getting singles victories.
“So we’ve had some good wins now,” the coach said.
The Lady Broncos didn’t have it any easier than the men in their second match, falling 9-0 to No. 3-ranked Seminole.
“I did not think our doubles played very well, but I think the girls played much better in the singles, especially Lorraine, who lost in a third-set tiebreaker 10-8,” Dan O’Connell said.
The split puts the ladies at 3-3 on the season, after splitting four matches last weekend. Both teams will be back in action Saturday with two more matches.
