LEVELLAND, Texas — It took a little while, but the Bronco basketball team finally got its first win of the season Saturday, topping Collin College 72-68 at the South Plains Invitational.
“It’s all good,” said an excited coach Ralph Davis. “Total team effort. We got down by about 13 early. The guys fought back and got up by 10. They came back and got close. We had an opportunity to probably make it less interesting. We missed some free throws late, but all in all it was good stuff. It was a good fight. Good work.”
After trailing by double digits early in the first half, NMMI (1-7) closed it to four at the half, trailing 42-38, before picking up the pace in the second.
“Our second half defense was great,” Davis said. “Some of the better offense played in the second half as well, which was encouraging to us.”
The Broncos (1-7) had their best game of the season at the line vs. the Cougars (3-3), going 13-for-17 from the charity stripe, 8-for-8 in the first half. They almost shot .500 from the field, and were 9-for-21 from the outside.
Marlon Alcindor led the NMMI scoring with 20 points, including a pair of treys. Logan Santiago tallied 16, with four treys, and Davis Steelman got back in double-digit territory with 11, including three 3s. Eight of the nine Broncos added to the point total.
The Broncos travel to Ranger College Monday, where they’ll take on the 5-0 Rangers at 6 p.m. MST.
“Hopefully we’ll get things going and do what we need to do,” Davis said. “The last six games we found ways to lose and today we found a way to win. That’s important as a progression goes. So we’re excited about it and looking forward to seeing what we can do.”
