Educational Background:
Colonel Jose Cruz Porras assumed his duties as Vice Dean of Academics/High School Principal, New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), on 1 July 2020.  Attending New Mexico Military Institute and receiving his Associated in 1997, Colonel Porras received his Bachelor of Science, Social Science from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. After twelve years of teaching, Colonel Porras began his administrative career as a Dean of Academic and Principal of the Lake Arthur Municipal Schools after receiving a Masters of Education from Eastern New Mexico University.

Colonel Porras comes to NMMI with twenty years’ experience in education as a teacher and administrator from the Lake Arthur Municipal Schools.  Along with his experience as an educator, Colonel Porras brings an understanding of New Mexico Military Institutes’ core values and principles. He attended NMMI on a football scholarship in ’95 and then graduated in 1997, J.C.

Porras returned to his high school alma mater to teach and coach in the Fall of 2000. As a teacher, Colonel Porras was involved in curriculum development and organizing the Social Studies Department.  He taught, American History, World History, New Mexico History, and Government/Economics at the secondary level.  He coached Varsity sports and was the athletic director for nineteen years.  Served on the New Mexico Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors served on the NMAA Sports Specific Committee, and served as a Class 1-A District Chairperson.

As principal and taking advantage of the current emphasis on high academic standards and high stakes testing, Colonel Porras has received extensive state and federal sponsored training, to include Results Driven Accountability and Principals Pursuing Excellence. In his previous assignment, he reorganized course offerings to more accurately reflect

student needs, managed the local Professional Development and Evaluations at all three levels of the Public School setting, and implemented standards-based instruction. Colonel Porras is skilled and has been involved in all aspects and areas of the principal leadership role.  He is competent in the use of the Positive Behavior Intervention Support System and class-based student management programs.  He has participated and directed analyzing information pertinent to school processes to have data-driven decision-making part of the non-negotiables of school level Professional Learning Community performance teams.

Colonel Porras is mission and goal-driven geared toward both staff and student performance.  His focus on goal setting of a strategic plan of action demonstrates his continued enthusiasm for surmounting challenges associated with students, building a student community, and addressing individual student needs.

Honors, Awards, and Publications:
His honors include completion of Principals Pursuing Excellence Program, Chaves County Character Counts Award, New Mexico Football Coach of the Year, New Mexico Athletic Director of the Year for Class 1-A, and Class 1-B.  New Mexico 6-man Football State Championship appearances (10) and (5) State Titles.
Colonel Porras is married to the former Jeanette Chaidez. They have three children, Alessandra (14), Jose, II (12), and Daniella (8).
