HUTCHINSON, Kansas - Windy and warm conditions greeted the athletes and coaches on the final day of competition at the 2010 NJCAA National Track and Field Championships at Gowans Stadium on the campus of Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas.  The South Plains Women’s team won for the second straight year and amassed 192 points to runner-up Central Arizona’ College’s 117 points. Iowa Central was third with 78 and New Mexico Junior College was fourth with 44.

Iwona Czerniak of the NMMI Lady Broncos Track and Field Team, in the 800 meter run, ran a time of 2:24.49 and placed 8th in the finals.  Unfortunately, she did not run anywhere close to the time she had run in the prelims.  Had she run that time, she would have placed 5th in the competition.

This brings to a close the 3rd season of the NMMI Lady Broncos Track and Field Team.  Each year, the team has qualified athletes to compete in the National Track and Field Meet.  Coach Batson is looking forward to next year’s team with high hopes of qualifying more athletes to compete against the best Junior College Track and Field Teams in the United States.  The Lady Broncos lose 5 upper classmen to graduation, and 1 athlete received her appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy.  Rita Herrera and Iwona Czerniak will be the only 2 returning members of the team to return next year.
