Preparing for the season opener is always a daunting task and the Bronco football coaches and players did a great job, despite not knowing much about the Monterrey Tech team they were up against. Their opponent – the Borregos Salvajes, or Wild Rams, a four-year football-playing school in Mexico, probably the equivalent of an NCAA Division 2 school here in the United States.
Although the Broncos never trailed, the first half was a battle, back-and-forth. After forcing a quick punt on the Ram’s first possession, the NMMI offense needed just two plays to hit pay dirt, with freshman quarterback David Vega dropping back to pass and hitting fellow freshman wide receiver Sonny Duran in the flats. Duran slipped one tackle, then got some incredible down-field blocking from his teammates, going 61 yards for the TD.
But Monterrey came right back, mounting an eight-play 76-yard drive to tie the score at 7-7.
Vega’s offense got the ball back and went to score again. This time Vega hit freshman slot back Tracy Craft with a pass over the middle. Once more, great down-field blocking appeared to get the Institute into the end zone, but this time the officials called an illegal block, nullifying the TD. Despite the set-back, the Broncos continued to drive, getting as close as the three yard line, but were unable to again punch the ball past the goal line, instead settling for a 21-yard field goal by sophomore place-kicker Jarred Martin.
After punts by both teams on their next possessions, NMMI missed a golden opportunity: Freshman strong safety Jeremy Coleman picked off a pass at the Monterrey Tech 48 yard line, returning it to their 28. Five plays and an illegal blocking penalty later saw the offense turning over the ball on downs back the Rams at their 44 yard line.
The next score in the game came on a nine-play, 71-yard TD drive, set up by a 44 yard pass from Vega to Xan Mangum, and capped off by an 11-yard strike to Jontrel Colbert – NMMI up 17-7.
But again the Rams came roaring back with a score just before halftime, to make it 17-13, after the PAT was blocked.
Things stayed close until the end of third quarter. NMMI scored on its opening possession after a 57 yard kickoff return by freshman E.J. Perkins-Loving, Tracy Craft running the ball in from 34 yards out the very next play. Seemingly undaunted, Tech scored a TD quickly as well, needing only seven plays and three minutes to keep the game within reach at 24-19 – the two-point conversion pass failing.
After a pass from Vega deflected off the the hands of Colbert and was intercepted and returned to the NMMI 28 yard line, the Rams had a chance for the go-ahead score. But the Black Swarm defense tightened up, forcing a 24-yard field goal attempt which clanged off the left post – no good.
A 41-yard FG attempt by Martin, six plays later, bounced off the left post and was good, putting NMMI up by eight: 27-19.
NMMI would score one more time in the third quarter, thanks to freshman corner back Xavier Allison’s first of two interceptions in the game, this one returned 35 yards to the Ram 28 yard line. Vega’s offense scored the TD in four plays, freshman running back Cyrus Chenault scampering in from 12 yards out.
A shanked punt by Monterrey on their next possession again gave the Institute great field position at the Ram 44 yard line. Three seconds later, the Broncos put the game almost out of reach, Vega connecting with sophomore wide-out Shawn Luna for his third touchdown pass on the night – NMMI up 41-19.
Two series of punts by both teams dropped the game clock to just 6 minutes left to play. Forced to punt a third time in a row by the Bronco defense, this time a bad deep-snap flew over the head of the Ram punter. He retrieved the ball in the end-zone and made a hurried kick before the Bronco ‘D’ sacked him in the end zone for a safety. The ball only went to the Monterrey 10 yard line, and was scooped up by sophomore Jeffrey English and returned for the touchdown. Institute up 48-19 after the PAT by Martin.
The final NMMI score came on a 91-yard run by freshman quarterback Jared Johnston, making the final score 55-19.
Next up for the Broncos (1-0) will be another road game, this time traveling north up to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force Prep on Friday, Sept. 3 at 2 pm.

The Roswell boys soccer team captured its third victory of the season on Saturday with a 6-0 drubbing of the New Mexico Military Institute Colts.

Jose Pacheco scored two goals for the Coyotes, while Adrian Reyes, Miguel Contreras, Trevor Pope and Jovanny Andrade each had one.
“We went up 3-0 in the first half, so I used my bench quite a bit,” said Roswell head coach James Vernon.
Contreras also had an assist, as did Diego Aceves, Jacob Sedillo and Fernando Sanchez. Roswell goalkeeper Rafael Vigil recorded six saves.
It wasn’t all good for Coyotes, though. Leading scorer Oscar Vela went down with a pulled hamstring just 3 minutes into the contest.
