A 34-year veteran of the US Navy, Retired Rear
Admiral David R. Ellison is a thoughtful, well-qualified scholar/leader
with extensive command, educational and staff experience. His last Navy
assignment before being named President & Superintendent of New Mexico
Military Institute was as Superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate
School, Monterey, California, where he provided leadership for over
2,800 faculty, staff, and students.
A native of Weymouth, MA, Ellison is a 1970 U.S. Naval Academy graduate
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. He earned his Master
of Science degree in Administration from The George Washington
University. In 1984, he completed a PhD in Business Administration at
The Pennsylvania State University. He completed the Senior Officials in
National Security Program at Harvard University in 1990, and during the
academic year 1995-1996, he was a Fellow on the Chief of Naval
Operations Strategic Studies Group at the Naval War College.
After graduating from the Naval Academy, Admiral Ellison began a Navy
career of more than 33 years in various and important Naval assignments,
including Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of
Defense and Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
Ellison’s command assignments include: the USS Kidd deployed to the
Arabian Gulf in Desert Storm/Desert Shield, and the USS Yorktown
operating in the Mediterranean supporting Joint/Coalition efforts during
hostilities in the Adriatic region.
Selected for flag rank in 1997, he served as Commander, South Atlantic
Force, through 1998. From 1999 to 2000, he served as Commander, Western
Hemisphere Group responsible for all naval operations in support of the
U.S. Southern Command.
Admiral Ellison’s awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the
Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (four awards), and the
Bronze Star with Combat “V.”
Admiral Ellison and his wife, Leslie, have three children: Christian,
Kyle, and Kari.
Admiral Ellison assumed the duties and responsibilities as the
eighteenth President and Superintendent of New Mexico Military Institute
in July 2004. |
