One of NMMI’s enduring
traditions, the “RAT” system, initiates new cadets to the Institute.
It is the basis of the old cadet – new cadet system. The responsibility
for teaching and training new cadets to take their place as members of
the Corps of Cadets resides solely with the old cadets. A new cadet enters NMMI
as a “RAT” (Recruit-At-Training) and lives within the system for a
specified period. The RAT system teaches and promotes:
-
Academic excellence, leadership,
character development and physical fitness
-
Self-discipline, conduct,
humility, and person responsibility
-
Respect for authority and the
forms of military and non-military courtesy
-
Neatness, cleanliness,
orderliness, punctuality and attention to detail
-
NMMI History and Tradition
-
Unity and Spirit or brother and
sisterhood that will last a lifetime as the result of shared
experiences in a challenging environment.
The system ensures that
all enjoy equal opportunity to advance through personal effort and to
enjoy earned rewards. Throughout most of the first year, the new cadet
walks a prescribed route on campus and double-times, or runs, in the
barracks area. In addition to the daily challenges of academics,
athletics, and other activities, including ROTC, a cadet must keep their
uniforms spotless, their shoes and boots shined, their hair cut or neat,
and their rooms and equipment clean and neat. Also, a new cadet is
responsible for memorizing school songs, yells, and other information
related to the history and traditions of NMMI.
