At
New Mexico Military Institute, athletics are an active part of the school's mission to educate
the whole person. The foundation of NMMI’s
athletic philosophy lies in our determination to
help our student-athletes develop
the character and intellectual capabilities that will ensure their
success in life. Lessons learned on the athletic field mirror those
taught in the Corps of Cadets – academic excellence, leadership,
character development, and physical fitness.
NMMI fields teams, both men’s and
women’s teams, at the intercollegiate and interscholastic levels in
sports that include: football, baseball, basketball, track, men's
soccer, tennis, swimming, golf and volleyball.
Our college teams compete in the
Western States Football League, the Western Junior College Athletic
Conference, and the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Our high school teams consistently
represent NMMI at State-level tournaments and bringing back a State
crown is the rule – not the exception!
Over the past five years
approximately 50 cadets have gone on to NCAA Division I and II schools,
including East Carolina, Temple, Florida A&M, Florida State, Arizona
State, and our nation’s Service Academies, to continue their
student-athlete careers.
NMMI's proud athletic history dates
back to 1893 with the formation of the first Institute baseball team.
The 1900 school year saw the creation of Bronco football team which has
produced such standouts as Heisman Trophy
recipient and NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Roger Staubach and All
American and NFL standout Steve Zabel. The 1950s saw the NMMI
Polo Team twice win the National Intercollegiate Championship. Since
our earliest beginnings, NMMI athletics has enjoyed a rich and storied
history that continues today.
Intramural sports are a regular part of
cadet life, including flag football, softball, basketball, soccer,
volleyball, and racquetball. Club sports are available as well and
include marksmanship teams, drill teams, skiing, martial arts, and
others.
NMMI boasts some of the
finest facilities in the State of New Mexico and in the nation and are
available for both team and individual use by cadets.
