New Mexico Military Institute
achieves its mission by using a general model of the human development
process. This model is applied as appropriate in each area to integrate
the cadet developmental experience.
The major premises of the
developmental model represent what we know about how humans best
develop. They establish the conditions under which, and the process by
which, development happens. These premises are that people develop best:
-
in an
environment of trust and respect, where human dignity and worth are
respected,
-
when the
outcomes of that development and the methods of assessing those outcomes
are specified,
-
when they
are responsible for their own development process, where they can make
bona fide choices, commit errors, and realize the consequences of their
actions,
-
when they
are challenged greatly beyond their current capability, yet supported in
their quest for greatness,
-
when they
realize that everyone around them is developing,
-
when they
learn to develop themselves.
While the premises are stated separately,
it must be understood that they work in concert. In whole, development
happens best in a trusting, respectful, cooperative, and responsible
environment where individuals are aware of the purposes and
methods, are enabled to make individual judgments and learn individually
from mistakes, are fully challenged yet fully supported, and ultimately,
take individual control of their own development.
