Getting Connected
Connection to the NMMI network is via 10BaseT Ethernet. RJ45 wall sockets are provided at each student's desk in Saunders, Hagerman and JRT. Cadet computers must have a Network Interface Card (NIC) supporting 10BaseT (twisted pair) Ethernet. See the Ethernet specification on the specification page for more detail. A standard 10BaseT Ethernet cable of length 6 feet or greater is also required.
The New Mexico Military Institute is responsible for the campus network from the wall socket in the cadet's room to the router carrying the Internet packets off campus. Information Services is responsible for the sockets, cable, switching routers, and servers. The cadet is responsible for the machine in the room, the NIC card and the Ethernet cable to the wall socket. NMMI staff members will provide advise, however as employees of the state of New Mexico we may not work on privately owned machines.
Some companies that sell computers provide 7x24 telephone support. If your cadet is not a computer "lover" you may want to consider a software support contract.
Matriculation Training
During Matriculation a 60 minute workshop intended for new students is provided as an introduction to the Institute's computer network and primary software. Since 60 minutes is not adequate to cover the needed material a web page with video demonstrations are available to guide the cadet through getting connected to our network. Handouts at this training help the cadet get physically connected to our network and gives them the link to the final stages of setting up on our network. This training is part of an evolving program using classes and web pages to provide newcomers assistance in accessing information and effectively using computers in classroom assignments.
Registration of Student Machines
The Institute is doing dynamic assignment of Internet addresses (DHCP). All cadets need do is have the Dynamic Assignment of Addresses box checked in the network setup to get onto the network. Setting an IP address will not work on cadet machines in the barracks. Most machines are configured for DHCP by default. The server which does the assignment of addresses will also require a new machine to register on the NMMI network. Getting registered, getting connected, and using DHCP are all described in the training web pages on the campus network. Cadets are encouraged to bookmark these pages for future reference.

The Toles Learning Center houses the Paul Horgan Library, Student Assistance Center and Information Services. The Paul Horgan Library houses a number of Windows 2000 machines for cadet use in research. The card catalog is on-line and available from the campus network. The library also supports reference materials provided by Proquest and First Search for on-line reference work. Classes in Internet research are conducted by the library staff at the start of each semester.
Student Assistance Center provides advising for high school students and also supports a career lab for advising students in career choices. The Choices software is supported in computer labs as is the Compass software for academic testing and advising.

Class - CSI 117 - Computer Concepts
This class in the Social Science and Business division studies the impact of computers on society, including the development of information processing and program development. Microcomputers are used for the teaching of various productivity applications such as word processing, database management, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and the Internet.

Campus labs offer an opportunity to use specialized software that the student may not wish to purchase, but may need to use for a specific assignment. Contact your division or department for more information on computing resources they offer. Current labs

are computer classrooms or used for special functions like the writing lab. During Night Study Hall, the Willson Applications Lab and the Willson PC labs provide approximately 75 machines for student use.
NMMI Online
Many courses at NMMI have some online component, including chat rooms, online syllabi, and assignments due via e-mail. The intent in moving to online classes is not to replace the classroom but to move appropriate learning functions to a more conducive media providing more time for "hands on" education. As more courses and units are added to the online catalog, it will become increasingly easy for students to meet with instructors and class members in the virtual classroom.
Online Tutorials
Several New Mexico Military web sites provide information on more advanced processes, such as web publishing, the Commandant's Blue Book, and the PRIDE program. A wealth of information is available for the interested student. New students are encouraged to explore the NMMI web site for helpful hints and tools to improve their knowledge and use of information technology.
Campus Communications (the CORPS Option)
Since 1992 NMMI staff have worked to provide informational reports on-line for the Corps of Cadets. The goal was to prevent any cadet from waiting in line to get information from administrative offices. Information like the Commandant's Dsheet, Cadet Status Report, deportment grades, the Registrar's progress report, class grades, the Business Office's report on cadet balances and charges, etc. have been available on-line for years.
Within the last year the reports have been moved from the VAX cluster to the internal web page. New administrative software has changed the look and feel of some of this information, while some of it is not readily available via the web, yet. We are working to re-gain access to all important information via the intranet.
The information is password protected on the internal web page and the cadets personal identifier (PID) is used as a key to lookup the information. That is, cadets may only access information stored under their unique PID. To view the information a cadet must have both the PID and associated password.
Personal Identifier (Cadet ID)
A Personal IDentifier (Cadet ID) is a unique ID assigned to each student. The ID is a 9 digit number assigned by our administrative software. For example, 000000002, any leading 0's are significant. When the ID is combined with the e-mail suffix "@nmmi.edu", an e-mail address is formed. For example, the above ID would have the e-mail address 000000002@nmmi.edu. IDs are given to students during the matriculation process in August.
