Information Services at the New Mexico Military Institute is organized around the following principles:

  • Information Services is a service oriented department reporting through the Deputy Superintendent of Business Affairs. The emphasis is information SERVICE, a small "information" and a large "SERVICE".
  • Information Services is a team oriented department. Projects are handled by teams. Larger projects are broken into tasks and worked on by more than one individual. Developer identification with "my system" is avoided and cross training encouraged.
  • All projects are reviewed by the staff during development and before release to campus users. An error in design or code is not a mistake until the product is released to the campus user. It is always good to have a second set of eyes look over a project in a non-threatening manner.

Hardware

The NMMI Glover Computer Center within Information Services houses four computer racks which hold NMMI’s servers, disk arrays, core switches and Internet appliances. Over 1 TB of online storage is shared between 12 Windows servers. NMMI servers are named for bears; Fozzy, Polar, Panda, Kodiak, Pooh, Papa, Mama, Baby etc. These servers house our SQL databases, Exchange email server, IIS web services, WebCT based learning, Sharepoint services, print services, network served software, and other applications. The servers also house the SCT Power Campus applications for the campus including web delivery of on-line applications, registration, student grades, student accounts, department budgets, etc. SCT Power Campus is based on Microsoft SQL as is the Polaris on-line catalog from Gaylord for the library, the Power Faids financial aid system and the Microsoft Great Plains business applications. This allows for the integration of most campus applications through web page delivery. As a Microsoft Campus Wide License site it also allows for ad hoc reporting using Microsoft Office and the development of in-house systems in SQL with excellent interface to other campus applications and Office. NMMI also maintains Linux servers for tasks like DHCP, network registration, and our web based FAQ server where open source software and low cost servers make it cost effective.

NMMI has an ATM connection to NMSU and CHECS-Net for Internet access. The ATM is split into two PVC’s, one for barracks traffic and one for academic/administrative. Each of the legs is regulated by a WatchGuard Firewall and Packeteer PacketShaper. The network uses a private address space and is segmented by building using VLANs. Fiber links between buildings are at 100 MB or 1 GB. All cadet rooms have a 10MB CAT5 connection to the network. Seven academic computer labs are maintained for subject matter areas and well as general use computers in the Toles Learning Center. All academic buildings have wireless Ethernet although sensitive administrative data is not sent over wireless links do to security concerns.
