Parents, Guardians and New
Cadets,
Congratulations and welcome to New Mexico Military Institute. We are
looking forward to meeting you at the parent and new cadet orientation
at 7:00 p.m., 6 August 2008 at Pearson Auditorium. Matriculation starts
for new cadets the following morning on 7 August 2008.
As the Commandant, I am responsible for
the safety, security, health and welfare, physical readiness,
accountability, mentorship and discipline of the Corps of Cadets. My
staff also handles housing, cadet activities and many other aspects of
your cadet’s daily life. Key to a cadet’s success is positive
encouragement from parents and guardians and regular communication with
Troop Leadership Advisors (TLAs). Throughout the Fall semester new
cadets will be challenged and rewarded in their pursuit of academic
excellence, leadership development and physical readiness. It usually
takes nine weeks of experiencing all aspects of cadet life (academics,
physical fitness, and military structure) before new cadets adjust to
the NMMI environment. New cadets are highly encouraged to arrive in good
physical condition. During the first weeks we will focus on stretching,
pushups, sit-ups and running one mile.
I have a well trained and qualified
staff focused on the Corps of Cadets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
during the entire school year. When you have any issues concerning your
cadet, the first person you should contact is your cadet’s Troop
Leadership Advisor (TLA). This is the adult staff member who will know
the most about your cadet and be able to assist you in the shortest
amount of time. Your cadet’s TLA will be able to direct you to the
right individuals for academic, athletic, administrative or health
related issues. The name of your Cadet’s TLA and his/her email, phone
number and fax number, and the cadet’s troop assignment is very
important information that you will receive during matriculation. You
can also call my office during normal business hours to get assistance.
Parents and Cadets should become
familiar with NMMI’s rules, policies, and procedures that were used to
develop the Cadet/Parent contract. Every cadet and his/her parent or
guardian is required to sign the contract to reinforce our collective
understanding and commitment to the established NMMI standards. The
contract is an effort to communicate with parents, guardians and cadets
to ensure understanding of the established framework of the rules and
policies that guide daily cadet life. Our high standards, the support of
parents and the commitment of the staff and faculty enable NMMI cadets
to achieve so much more.
NMMI sends a weekly email newsletter
that highlights Corps activities, cadet accomplishments, NMMI news and
events, athletic scores and updates and important information for
parents. To sign up for the Parent E-Newsletter visit
http://mailman.nmmi.edu/mailman/listinfo/parentenews or for
more information please visit the NMMI Newsletter website at
http://www.nmmi.edu/mailman.
I strongly encourage parents to sign up for the parent email and make
frequent visits to our website,
www.nmmi.edu, which has the
school’s Master Calendar highlighting special activities and
events.
Enclosed with this letter is important
information that you and your cadet must read. Please take the time to
accurately fill out the paperwork and return it by 26 July. It is
critical that we have your email address and phone numbers. The
Parent/Cadet contract and procedures for emergency communications are
very important so please go over them carefully with your cadet. Thank
you and welcome to the NMMI family!
