CADET COUNSELING CENTEROur Mission is Cadet Success. The goals of individual and group counseling are to help students to increase self-understanding and to enhance cadets’ ability to relate to others more effectively. Professional counselors assist in exploration of problem areas and offer strategies for change. Our focus is to assist cadets serving as leaders and in becoming persons of character who are able to consistently make the right choices, to teach them to be valuable and productive team members, and to demonstrate positive, responsible decision-making skills in all areas of life. Our efforts are directed towards cadets successfully achieving the Learning Outcomes as members of the Corps of Cadets. Counselors help each cadet accommodate to the demands of the NMMI academic and corps environment, by assessing individual strengths and weaknesses, and assisting cadets in learning how to successfully live in a shared community environment, be productive students and become effective leaders. We are advocates for cadets in working out problems and strategies for success at NMMI. We teach the goals and mission of the school as a means to succeed not only here, but in life. The areas of concern that can be addressed in counseling are: self-confidence/self-esteem, homesickness, relationships, stress, depression, anxiety, ethical/moral issues, adjusting to life as a cadet, conformity to discipline, alcohol/substance abuse, and family problems. One important aspect of the Cadet Counseling Centers (CCC) mission is prevention of high risk behavior. The news is filled with young people making the wrong decisions in high risk situations. The staff is committed to give cadets the tools to make solid decisions through education and mentoring and intervene when poor decisions are made. The CCC staff maintains close cooperation and coordination with Troop Leadership Advisors, the parents, Infirmary Staff, Academic Advisors, The Toles Learning Center, Faculty, Commandant’s staff and the cadet senior leaders in addressing concerns of the cadet's educational, social and personal development. If the cadet needs more specialized or long-term counseling, then the Cadet Counseling Center will make referrals to appropriate medical, legal or social work professionals at the Cadet's expense. Psychiatric services are not available through the CCC, however the Cadet Counseling Center staff can provide appropriate referrals to local psychiatrists. Cadet Counseling Center offices are located in the J. Ross Thomas building on campus and are manned from 6:45 AM to 5:00 PM with appointments available at other times as necessary. Cadet Counseling Center staff is on-call 24/7 for emergencies. Chaplain (Maj) Musgrave - Director of Cadet Counseling Center Maj Featherstone - Counselor Capt Walker - Counselor |
