NMMI Colt Swim Team Makes Presence at 2008 State Championship

 NMMI Sports Press 02/23/08

There was a buzz of energy radiating throughout Albuquerque Academy’s top-of-the line aquatic facility. The clear-blue water did not remain still for long as soon the top swimmers from assorted New Mexico high schools filled both pools preparing for the day’s races. Included among them was New Mexico Military Institute’s Colt Swim Team. This elite team, like many others, had come to test their abilities against the other swimmers that had made it to the New Mexico Activities Association’s 2008 State Championship for swimming.

As warm-ups ended and the preliminary races began, the crowd of team members, coaches, and spectators that filled the natatorium erupted with cheering for teammates and preferred racers. The Colts were no exception to this, and the team roared as the boy’s 200 yard Medley Relay Team raced to a 2:01.02 finish, placing them in 20th for that event.

Success was hard won for NMMI senior Brandon Bourn, who qualified for finals in both 100 yard Butterfly stroke and 100 yard Breaststroke with a 58.02 and 1:07.23 respectively. Bourn went on to claim 8th place in the Butterfly event with a final time of 57.67 and just narrowly missed medaling for Breaststroke, swimming a 1:06.03 and ended his high school swimming career amid the congratulations of coaches and teammates.

Effort and spirit was not lacking from the girl’s 200 yard Freestyle Relay Team, as each team member dove into the water with the encouragement of their peers hot at their heels. The group, consisting of two seniors and two freshmen, beat their seed time by almost two seconds as they completed the race with a time of 1:54.75.

The boy’s 200 yard Freestyle Relay Team also made it to finals. Colt team members were present at the far end of the pool to cheer on the group, with each member darting through the water to complete the race with a time of 1:39.76.

Swimming was not the only event that the Colts contended in, with senior Kenni Estrada competing in the girl’s 1 meter dive event. Estrada finished with a score of 222.45.

Clearly the efforts of NMMI swimmers and coaches were not an exercise in futility. The team’s presence at the 2008 State Championship echoes the work put in to get to this point. Members represented not only themselves, but the school by putting their best into what was, for many, to be the final races of their high school careers. NMMI has much to be proud of in these fine cadets and their quest for excellence.

The NMMI Colt Swim Team is coached by Jan Olesinski, who is assisted by Christopher Byrne, Nicholas Calderon, Joshua Marshall, Orlando Morel, and Travis Sanchez. The team of state qualified athletes for 2008 consists of Brandon Bourn (senior), John Brocker (senior), Luis Martinez (senior), David Weeks (senior), Daniel Higgins II (junior), Andrew Fisher (sophomore), Kimberly Larkin (senior), Cheri Haarmeyer (senior), Molly Minchew (freshman), Courtney Holm (freshman), and diver Kenni Estrada (senior).
