Tucumcari Rattlers Bite the Colts 47-14
10/19/07
The New Mexico
Military Institute Colts got a strong offensive performance from running
back Andrew Trujillo but it was the Tucumcari’s rushing attack that
prevailed as the Rattlers won their Homecoming game 47-14.
NMMI managed only 13
yards of total offense in the second quarter as Tucumcari’s defense held
them in check for most of the night.
Tucumcari got a score
on their first possession of the game and took a 7-0 lead. They would
tack on two more scores before the end of the first half to take a 21-0
lead.
The Colts had their
most impressive drive of the game on their second possession of the
third quarter. Andrew Trujillo carried the ball 9 times on the Colts’
16 play drive. Trujillo capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
Fullback Harvey
Johnson scored his first touchdown of the season when he broke free on a
74-yard run up the middle. Mario Lozoya’s extra point was good.
Tucumcari’s led fell to 27-14.
Tucumcari was able to
put the game out of reach when they scored three touchdowns in a minute
and forty-nine seconds to push their lead to 47-14.
For Trujillo, he had a
season high 91-yards on 26 carries. Johnson has put together
back-to-back solid performances. This time he managed 80 yards on only
9 carries. Jett Nelson led the Colts with 5 solo tackles on defense
including the big hit of the night on a Tucumcari defender.
With the loss, NMMI
drops to 0-6 on the season while Tucumcari moves to 5-3. NMMI will move
into district play next Friday when they host the Portales Rams.
