Colt
Football Looks to Rebound in '07
9/5/07
Roswell, NM -- The New
Mexico Military Institute Colt football team would like to take a page
from the Colt basketball playbook. After going winless two seasons ago,
the Colt basketball program made a remarkable turnaround, advancing to
the Class 3A State Quarterfinals last season. The Colt football program
is looking forward to the same challenge following the 2006 season in
which they failed to win a game.
The coaching staff is excited and optimistic about the
upcoming season. There was an overall improvement in the fundamentals
of football as the season progressed last season and with a talented
crop of incoming players, we should expect good things from the Colts in
2007.
Senior DeMarcus Doucette will be a key addition to the Colts
this year. Doucette was instrumental in Colt basketball's turnaround
from the point guard position last year. This season he joins the Colt
football program as the team's quarterback. Doucette's speed and
quickness will be his greatest attribute this season. Junior Quinby
Johnson could also see some action at quarterback.
The Colt running game will be improved with the addition of
Josh Baird from Albuquerque. The 5'9", 175 pound running back has shown
good speed in the early fall camp. Junior fullback Harvey Johnson
returns as the team's leading rusher from 2006.
The offensive line will be held down by returners Tsowang
Sherpa and Rodrigo Camino. Sean Amick will also be a key contributor on
the offensive line.
The defensive line will feature senior Charlie Cummings.
Standing 6’5” and weighing 225 pound, Cummings will be a force to deal
with for opposing offenses.
Camino and Baird will be the core of the Colts’ linebacker
unit. Johnson and Andres Atencio will cover the cornerback positions
while Doucette will play free safety.
Senior Mario Lozoya will be doing the kicking and punting
for the Colts this season.
The Colts’ schedule
is tough as usual. In addition to NMMI’s familiar district rivals
Portales, Lovington and Ruidoso, the Colts will take on some of the
state’s best in Socorro, Hot Springs and St. Michael’s. The 2007
schedule features ten total games including five at home. The only
district match-up to be played at home will be against Portales in late
October.
