Colt Basketball Takes Three from Warriors
02/05/08 Three games, three victories for the New Mexico Military Institute Colt Boys Basketball program here at home Monday night versus the Ruidoso Warriors. The Colt C Team started the sweep, defeating Ruidoso High School’s C squad in a match that went down to the wire: 37-33. Giles Zollar led Colt scorers with 10 points, despite only playing in the fourth period. Eric Gallegos and J.J. Dawson of NMMI contributed 9 and 8 points, respectively. Ruidoso was led by Forest Sanchez’s 13. In another closely contested match, the NMMI Colt JV team managed to pull away in the final seconds with some clutch shooting from the foul line, outlasting the Ruidoso Warrior JVers, 56-48. Warrior Ralph Miranda led all players with 18 points. The Colts countered with 12 on the inside from Giles Zollar and 11 from the outside by Eric Fan, including 3 three-pointers. NMMI’s Michael Chacon hit 7 of 8 free throws, 5 of which occurred in the last 2 minutes. In the Varsity match, it was the inside play of Eduardo Martinez leading the way to NMMI’s second straight district win, 39-33, over Ruidoso. Martinez pulled down 10 rebounds and put up 16 points, helping the Colts keep a 21-13 halftime lead that melted down to just two with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Ruidoso’s Kiel Burkett kept things close for the Warriors, adding 11 points for his team. Both NMMI and Ruidoso leave tonight’s contest with 2-2 district records. The Colts play their next district game against the Rams in Portales on Saturday, February 9 at 7:00pm. The Warriors play Portales at home on Tuesday, February 12. |
