Colts come back from break with strong
performance
1/15/2007
Roswell, NM -- The Colt basketball team's
three-week layoff for the winter break didn't seem to bother them as
they returned to action in the new year. The Colts opened the new
year by beating Las Vegas Robertson
by a score of 66-62.
NMMI once held an 11-point advantage, but the Cardinal’s pressure
defense brought them back early in the third quarter. Senior guard
Andrew Cowan sank two key free throws with less than a minute remaining
in the game to put the game out of reach for the Colts. Connor
Williamson led NMMI with 24 points while converting on 12 of his 15 free
throw attempts. DeMarcus Doucette also had a big game with 17 points.
A new rivalry has formed with cross-town
foe Gateway Christian. Having already beaten the Warriors on the
road earlier in the season, the Colts looked to have their way on their
home court. However, the Colts found themselves down by 8 points
with only three minutes remaining in the game. Greg McCoy pulled
down a huge defensive rebound and sent the ball down the court for an
easy basket pulling the Colts to within 6 points of the lead. A
strong pressure defense caused a 12 point swing for the Colts as they
got up by 4 points with only seconds to play. Gateway was able to
pull to within two points from the lead but failed on their three point
attempt as time expired giving NMMI the 48-46 victory.
Over the last weekend, the Colts traveled
down to take part in the Dexter Invitational. They were matched up
with Mesilla Valley from Las Cruces in the first round. The team
featured a player standing 6'8" tall and another standing 6'7" inches
tall. Although overmatched in the size department, the Colts
played well only to lose the game 55-51.
They were able to bounce back in the second
round with a convincing 50-39 win over Tularosa. That was the
third win of the season for NMMI over Tularosa. In the Consolation
Championship, the Colts took on Hot Springs High and were able to put
them away 62-45. Connor Williamson and DeMarcus Doucette were
named to the all-tournament team.
The Colts' record stands at 11-6 with
district play beginning on Tuesday when they travel to Portales to take
on the Rams. |
