The New Mexico Military Institute Athletic Department has added another one of their own to the ranks of their coaching staff. Pilar Carrasco 1994 JCG is returning to the Institute to lead the Colt basketball team. Carrasco was previously at NMMI from 1999 to 2001 as an instructor and an assistant high school football coach.
Carrasco came to NMMI in the fall of 1992. He excelled both in the corps and on the playing field. In only two years, Carrasco was promoted to a Troop Commander position and later promoted again to the Regimental Staff.
As an athlete, Carrasco was a stand out in three sports at the college level. He was a member of the Bronco football, basketball, and track teams. In today’s sports world, with sport specific specialization, two-sport college athletes are hard two find, college athletes who compete in three sports are unheard of.
As a coach, he hopes to get the same out of his athletes; he wants them to participate in more than one sport. “Off-season is great, but one thing off-season can’t teach you is how to be competitive and how to beat an opposing team,” Carrasco said. “That’s what I want. I want these kids to understand that you have to line up and say, ‘I’m better than him’ whether it’s on the football field or if it’s chess.”
After graduating from NMMI, Carrasco moved on to Eastern New Mexico University. There he continued his athletic and academic dominance, earning All Lone Star Conference honors as a tight end in football. He also earned all LSC Academic honors.
Carrasco began his coaching career at NMMI in the fall of 1999. He served as the Defensive Coordinator for three seasons. While at NMMI, he was a math and science instructor.
Coach Carrasco got his first head coaching experience in 2001. He returned to his hometown of Lovington, NM to become the head coach for the girl’s basketball team. In four seasons, Coach Carrasco led them to one district championship and their first ever state tournament appearance, where they finished with a second place trophy.
An opportunity to lead the Colt basketball team brought Coach Carrasco back to the Institute. In his second go round, Carrasco will also assist with the Colt track team and help with the Colt football team. His other duties include being an instructor in the Physical Education Department.
He will head the physical fitness portion of the new LET 1 program which is designed to develop the leadership characteristics in the fifth and sixth classmen. Coach Carrasco added, “I just want to help the next generation of cadet to be effective when they get out of here.”
