Goddard with timely hit
Artesia sophomore Deven Nelson was called upon to drop a
sacrifice bunt in the top of the seventh inning of a scoreless game on
Saturday. The finale of the District 4-4A round robin at Goddard had
come down to it and it was only fitting that Nelson was in the spot to

called Saturday's doubleheader at Dexter "must wins." His Colts
obliged. The Demons battled the Colts (12-12, 8-6) deep into the

NMMI Colts walk
way to Lovington split
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It seems like
that's been the order lately with the New Mexico Military Institute
Colts, who snapped a two-game losing streak with a 10-6 win, during
which the team had no walks in a complete game pitching performance by
Fernando Nunez, over the Lovington Wildcats.

Colts sweep home
pair from Dexter
New Mexico Military Institute head coach Charlie Ward
called the first game of a doubleheader against Dexter, "one of the
ugliest wins I've been a part of." The Colts (7-9 (3-3) took a
4-1 lead after two innings before falling behind 14-6 midway through the
fifth.

With two
outs, trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh of the 2008
Roswell Sertoma Colt Classic championship game and the bases
loaded, Gateway Warriors left fielder Tony Oaxaca was at the
plate having earlier struck a two-run single against the
Tularosa Wildcats.

opening day of the 2008 Roswell Sertoma Colt Classic featured
good hitting, but great pitching in all four games. In each of
the opening-round games, the winning team was provided with a
starter who threw a complete game while recording at least seven
strikeouts.

After
being rained out last year, the 14th Annual Roswell Sertoma Colt
Classic looks to crown a champion in 2008. And this year's
winner will have to go through perhaps the toughest field ever
assembled for the tournament that claims to be the "best
small-school tournament in the state."

Colts top host Demons for
3rd place |

The
battle for third place in the 10th annual Hal Bogle Tournament
featured the host Dexter Demons and their district rival NMMI
Colts. District match-ups and consolation championships are
normally reason enough to tune into a baseball game, but this
one got an extra dose of excitement by the return of Colts' ace
Josh Schmille, who started for the first time since having Tommy
John surgery.

Dexter Demons evened their record and played near-perfect
defense to defeat the Lake Arthur Panthers 10-3. Demons starter
Tim Regalado took the win striking out five in a complete game.
Panthers pitcher Chase Milligan took the complete game loss.

Colts, Lions each
win big in doubleheader split |

New Mexico Military Institute seniors Ja'mari James and
Josh Schmille produced more than enough offense, and
James doubled with an effective outing on the mound for
the Colts in a 14-4 Game 1 win over Valley Christian at
NMMI Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Saturday, with Jefferson and the New Mexico Military Institute
Colts each searching for their first win on the season and
playing each other in the Artesia Invitational, the Colts were
the ones able to put it all together in the final game in a 10-4
win.

bats stifled in cold, fall in opener |

It was
12 degrees on the field to start the game. That didn't cool off
flame-throwing Bernalillo Spartans (1-0) ace, Alan Gallegos,
from no-hitting the New Mexico Military Institute Colts while
facing just 16 batters over five innings, one more than the
minimum for a perfect game.
