Open Strong at Lobo Open

Coach Gene Hardman took the top six Bronco tennis players to Albuquerque
over the Labor Day weekend to play at the Lobo Open. All the players
showed excellent competitiveness and all held their own against superior
opposition including the entire University of New Mexico team.
Chris Toli, NMMI's #1
player, won his first two rounds to make it to the quarterfinals. There
he played UNM's #1 player and lost 6-1, 6-1. Sammy Ramoni, Danny
Dominguez, Ben Mantell, Ben Martin, and Greg Mitchell all won at least
one singles match. One of the highlights was Mitchell’s match against
Luke Salazar from Western NM. Although he lost 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8
[tiebreaker] Mitchell showed he is a solid college player.
In doubles play, all
the NMMI netters proved they can compete. The best match of the day was
Mitchell and Martin's 6-7 (5), 6-4, 3-6 loss to the UNM team of Derrick
Lynch and Ian Mordant. This contest showed these to Coast Guard Academy
preps can play at a D-1 level.
The Broncos travel to
Abilene TX to play at Abilene Christian's Wal Mart Open (7/8 Sept).
