NMMI Earns Road Win Against AWC 35-16
10/21/06
Yuma, AZ – New Mexico Military Institute won their third road game of the season with a 35-16 win over Arizona Western College. The Broncos top ranked rushing attack was instrumental but it was their passing game that led them to victory.
NMMI got on the board first with 14-play, 91-yard drive that was capped off with a 12-yard option run by Anthony Young. The long drive was made possible with the powerful running of fullback Cortea Minor who had three runs of ten or more yards on the drive.
The Broncos had a chance to go up big on AWC in the second quarter when two sure interceptions were dropped and one was called back due to a late hit on the quarterback. With the miscues on defense for NMMI, AWC was able to hang on to the ball a put three points on the board with a 25-yard field goal.
AWC had cued into the NMMI running game, severely limiting the production of NMMI’s two big play threats, Eric Hart and Tim Hamett. With the defense looking to stop the run, quarterback John Props hooked up with wide receiver Darrell Armstead on a 25-yard touch down pass to extend the Broncos’ lead to 14-3.
The second half opened with some offensive fireworks. Both teams combined for three touchdowns in a time of six minutes on the game clock. AWC closed the NMMI lead to four with a 43-yard touch down reception. NMMI answered with a 13-play, 72-yard drive and a touchdown by Hart. On the next play from scrimmage, the Bronco defenders bit on the flea-flicker as an AWC receiver got behind the defense for a 62-yard touchdown reception.
NMMI put the game out of reach with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Props threw his second touchdown of the game when he found Hamett for a 37-yard score. Cortea Minor’s hard work paid off when he punched one in the end zone from 6 yards out to seal the deal for the Broncos, 35-16.
Offensively for NMMI, they racked up 279 yards on the ground and added 75 yards in the air. Minor led all rushers with 129 yards while Hart pitched in with 65.
The revamped Bronco defense has continued to improve and only allowed 76 yards on the ground. AWC did manage 217 passing yards on the Bronco defense but they were sacked twice and had one pass intercepted. Mike Mosley recorded his seventh sack of the season while Roddray Walker picked up his second interception.
With the win, NMMI gets back to .500 with a 4-4 record and a 3-3 record in the WSFL. They will have an off week coming up before they take on Eastern Arizona College and former head coach John O’mera.
