Phoenix Rolls Past NMMI 36-14

10/27/07

Phoenix, AZ – New Mexico Military Institute and Phoenix College are not having the seasons that they wanted so both teams were eager to gain one in the win column.  NMMI had won the last two meetings between the teams with both games held in Roswell.  This time, the location was different, Phoenix, and the result was different, a 36-14 win for Phoenix.

The first quarter went by with neither team finding the end zone.  It was largely dominated by defense and special teams as neither team could gain any momentum on the offensive side of the ball.

Phoenix scored the first touchdown of the game with 4:09 remaining in the half.  Phoenix quarterback Corrdero Drummond found Chris Miranda on a 60-yard touchdown pass after it appeared that the play was over when Drummand apparently knelt on the ground to pick up the muffed snap.  The play continued and Phoenix wound up on top 7-0.

The Broncos wasted no time tying the score after quarterback Stephen Baca keep the ball on a keeper and raced 44-yards down to the Phoenix side of the field.  Darrin Allen took then took a hand off and scampered 22-yards.  Michael McIntosh would tie the score with his second touchdown of the season.

A 40-yard kick return set the Bears up with great field position and they retook the lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Robert Benjamin to Jordan Flores.  The extra point was blocked and Phoenix took a 13-7 half time lead.

NMMI fumbled on their first possession of the second half and Phoenix capitalized with a 21-yard field goal.

After the Broncos failed to gain a first down on a fourth down try from the Phoenix 35-yard line, Phoenix drove the length of the field scoring on a 5-yard pass from Benjamin to Josh Felton.

Phoenix went up 29-7 after Darius Walton intercepted a pass from Shandon Augustus and returned it to the NMMI 5-yard line.  Akeelo Rhoden carried it in from 5-yards out for the score.

Phoenix put the game out of reach with a long, time consuming drive ending with a Benjamin touchdown run to extend the lead to 36-7.

NMMI would add their final score with 5:33 remaining in the game when Baca kept the ball and ran in for a 5-yard score.  That would be all of the scoring as Phoenix held on to win 36-14.

NMMI falls to 2-7 on the season and 1-5 in the WSFL.  Phoenix now stands at 2-6 and moves ahead of NMMI in the WSFL standings with a 2-4 record.  NMMI will be at home next Saturday to take on Arizona Western College.  Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
