Broncos Show Improvement against Hardin Simmons

8/23/07

Abilene, TX – In their final tune-up prior to the upcoming regular season, the Bronco football team has shown great strides since camp opened in late July.  Unofficially, the scrimmage with Hardin Simmons University ended in a 43-43 tie.  NMMI’s first and second teams performed well on both sides of the ball.

The Broncos wasted no time on offense, scoring on the first possession of the game.  Sophomore running back Anthony Young broke free for a 30-yard run.  Ovie Esalomi followed that run with a 40-yard run for a touchdown.

HSU followed with a quick score putting them ahead 7-6.  On the ensuing kickoff, Esalomi caught the ball at his own 5-yard line and returned the kick untouched 95-yards for a touchdown.

Later in the second quarter, with the Broncos down 14-12, quarterback Stephen Baca found receiver Darin Allen in the end zone for a score but the play was called back due to a penalty.  On fourth-and-long from the 40-yard line, Baca looked to his other receiver Darrell Armstead on the other side of the field for a diving catch and a touchdown.

Kicker, Kevin Perez converted on a 43-yard field goal to extend the Bronco lead to 22-21.  With less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Broncos drove the length of the field and Esalomi broke free for his third score of the game.

Quarterback Brandon Zackery would add another score when he snuck in from the one-yard line.  He also completed a pass for a touchdown to Quinton Pettis as he out jumped the Cowboy defender and snatched the ball for a touchdown.

Defensively for the Broncos, sophomore linebackers Hollan Fiu and Jonathan Rosales were instrumental in shutting down the Cowboy rushing game.  Dominic Smith provided consistent pressure on the quarterback as he picked up one sack.

The Broncos will open the season in Hobbs when the take on the Lea County Lightning.  Kickoff is set for 6 pm at the Hobbs High School football stadium.  Be sure to tune in to KCKN Radio on AM 1020 or listen to a live stream over the internet at www.kckn1020.com for complete coverage of the Broncos.
