Broncos Come Up Short, Forth Ranked Eastern Arizona Holds on 23-13
10/6/07
Thatcher, AZ – A game that featured the nation’s top two rushing teams turned out to be a defense dominated football game as the fourth ranked Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters defeated the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos 23-13.
Eastern Arizona got on the board first with a 30-yard field goal by Steven Holmes with 3:13 left in the first quarter.
NMMI answered on their next drive. Stephen Baca (So. QB, Justin, TX) kept the ball on an option run and ran 28-yards to the EAC 3-yard line. Cortae Minor (So. FB, Henderson, NV) put the Broncos on top with a 3-yard touchdown run with 12:23 remaining in the second quarter.
EAC scored their first touchdown of the game when quarterback Pat Riley scampered 24-yards for the score.
NMMI was forced to punt to EAC with 2:00 remaining in the half. EAC’s drive looked to stall out as NMMI’s Hollan Fiu (So. LB, Pago Pago, AS) tackled the EAC receiver for a 12-yard loss all the way back to their 49-yard line. A penalty by the Broncos extended the drive by giving EAC a first down. Riley would break though for another big run down to the NMMI 1-yard line. He would call his own number and score on a quarterback keeper as time expired in the first half. The extra-point was good, giving EAC the 17-7 lead.
EAC opened the second half with a 51-yard field goal attempt. The kick sailed wide left and the Broncos took over with good field position.
NMMI got solid production from their passing game as Baca connected with Darrin Allen (So. WR, New Orleans, LA) for completions of 21 and 25-yards. Kevin Perez (Fr. K, El Paso, TX) cut the EAC lead down to 17-10 with a 23-yard field goal with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.
NMMI got another field goal from Perez with 32 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he converted on a 20-yard try to cut the lead down to 17-13.
With 7:48 remaining in the game and the Broncos driving, EAC intercepted Baca’s pass in the end zone to end NMMI’s threat. EAC would tack on one more score with 2:09 remaining in the half to secure the victory.
EAC moves to 7-0 on the season while NMMI drops to 1-5. The Broncos will face Pima Community College next Saturday at Colt Field in Roswell.
