Broncos Conclude 2007 Season with Awards Banquet

12/7/07

Roswell, NM – The 2007 Bronco football season came to an end with the awards banquet held in VMV Hall at NMMI.  The Bronco football staff presented members of the team with numerous postseason awards.

Robert Smith was awarded the Black Lion Award.  This is awarded to the individual that "best exemplifies the character of Don Holleder: leadership, courage, devotion to duty, self-sacrifice, and - above all - an unselfish concern for the team ahead of himself."  Smith, who is in his fifth semester at NMMI, overcame a devastating knee injury during a preseason scrimmage in his freshman year.  He has overcome the adversity and became a two-year starter and leader for the Broncos.   In addition to his accomplishments on the field, the Artesia, NM native is also a highly ranked officer in the Corps of Cadets.

The Lefty Stecklein Memorial Award was given to Kenyon Littles.  Stecklein had 32 years of service at NMMI as the athletic director and Bronco football coach.  Littles earned this award for being the top new cadet on the Bronco football team.  Littles moved from cornerback to running back after injuries to the Bronco backfield.  The selfless act paid off for Littles in the final game of the season as he scored his first touchdown against the number one ranked Snow Badgers.

The Art Foley Memorial Award is given to the most outstanding old cadet on the Bronco football team.  As a former recipient of this award, Head Coach Jeff Lynn presented this year’s award to Derek Dimitroff from Fort Sumner, NM.  Dimitroff is a sophomore linebacker and Alpha Troop Commander.  He was second on the team with 66 total tackles this past season and was a leader on NMMI’s Black Swarm defense.

The Offensive Most Valuable Player award went to Darrin Allen.  A versatile player from New Orleans, LA, Allen moved from wide receiver to play running back for the Broncos.  He led the team with 800 all purpose yards.  He was fourth on the team in rushing with 328 yards and second in receiving with 248 yards.

The Offensive Hustler award went to quarterback Stephen Baca.  After starting the season in a platoon situation, Baca took over the role as starting quarterback and flourished.  His hard work in the weight-room and film sessions led to a productive season as he accounted for 110.4 yards per game on offense.

The Defensive Most Valuable Player award went to Hollan Fiu.  Having the most productive defensive season in recent history, Fiu led the team in nearly every statistical category.  He ranked third in the NJCAA in total tackles with 124 and solo tackles with 85.  From the linebacker position, Fiu recorded 10.5 sacks.

Roswell native, Jay Johnson was awarded the Defensive Hustler award.  The defensive back was the first freshman to win the award for the Broncos.  He was third on the team with 60 total tackles.

The Special Teams Award was given to Troy Seivwright-Adams.  The speedy punt return man led the WSFL with a 21.4 punt return average and 3 touchdowns.

The Parents of the Year Award was given to Earnest and Julie Story of Las Cruces, NM and David and Debbie Byrd of Farmington, NM.  Their support throughout the season was instrumental to the success of the program.

The Fan of the Year Award was given to Julie Jimenez for her support during the past season.  Jimenez provided the team with snack bags for each of the Broncos’ road games this year.

The Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 3-8 and a conference record of 2-6.  Despite a string of injuries to the offensive backfield, NMMI was the nation’s 14th ranked offense and 2nd ranked rushing offense.  The 2007 season included trips to five different states (New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah).  Seivwright-Adams was the NJCAA’s Special Teams Player of the Week once and the WSFL’s Player of the Week twice.  Kevin Perez and Ovie Esalomi were also recognized as WSFL Special Teams and Offensive Players of the Week.  All-Conference honors went to 1st Team Linebacker Fiu and 1st Team Return Specialst Seivwright-Adams.  Darrell Armstead earned 2nd Team Wide Receiver honors and Perez earned 2nd Team Kicker honors.
