NMMI Lands Five Players on the All-Conference List

11/16/06

Roswell, NM – New Mexico Military Institute head football coach Jeff Lynn has announced his team’s Western States Football League All-Conference award winners for the 2006 season.  NMMI earned five awards including one first-team award.  Eric Hart, Cortea Minor and Tim Hamett earned offensive awards while Nick Jackson and Charles Ofili earned defensive awards.

Eric Hart, a sophomore running back from Aiken, South Carolina earned 1st Team honors at the running back position.  In 2006 Hart was the second leading rusher in the WSFL with 862 yards and an average of 95.8 yards per game.  He was also second in the league with nine rushing touchdowns.

Hart earned the WSFL’s Offensive Player of the Week Award on September 30 for his performance against Pima Community College.  He ran for 186 yards on only 12 carries and added 3 touchdowns in NMMI’s 49-6 victory.

Cortea Minor, a freshman from Henderson, Nevada earned 2nd Team honors at the running back position.  Playing the fullback position for the Broncos, Minor was third in the conference with 796 yards rushing.  He added 6 rushing touchdowns.  Minor capped off his freshman season with four consecutive 100-yard rushing performances against WSFL opponents.

Tim Hamett earned 2nd Team honors at wide receiver.  Hamett is a sophomore from Midland, Texas.  In 2006, Hamett served as NMMI’s all purpose back.  He pulled in 17 catches for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He also rushed for 359 yards and 1 touchdown.  On punt returns, Hamett was fourth in the conference with 7.1 yards per return.  He also averaged 18.8 yards per kickoff return.  All together, Hamett led NMMI with 1,237 all-purpose yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive tackle Charles Ofili and linebacker Nick Jackson earned 2nd Team honors.  Jackson is a sophomore from Grand Prairie, Texas.  He came into the 2006 season having earned NJCAA Preseason All-American Honors.  In 2006, Jackson led NMMI with 54 tackles, including 9 tackles for a loss.

Ofili, a sophomore from Houston, Texas was the primary run stopper for the NMMI defense.  He only totaled 15 tackles on the season but his presence in the middle of the defensive line allowed other NMMI defenders to make plays as he was often double-teamed.  Ofili anchored the NMMI defense that only allowed four teams to rush for more than 100-yards against them.

NMMI finished the season with a record of 5-5 and 4-4 in the WSFL.  Their season was highlighted by being the top rushing team in the nation for most of the year before dropping to number two in the final weeks of the season.
