Broncos Win Overtime Thriller

The New Mexico Military Institute Broncos (4-1) up-ended 22nd ranked Phoenix College (3-2) at home in overtime, 34-31. The Broncos couldn't keep a 21-7 halftime lead, allowing the Bears from Phoenix to roar back with two unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter. In the fourth, the two teams exchanged dances in the end zone, leaving the score tied 28 all at the end of regulation play. Overtime format in NJCAA in the same as the NCAA, with both teams getting their chance at the opposition's 25 yard line.

The Broncos won the toss and elected to defend first. The Bronco Black Swarm defense stepped up in a big way and held the Bears to just 4 yards in three plays. Phoenix elected to kick the field goal on 4th down, and Josh Hardin split the uprights from 38 yards, giving the Bears the temporary 3 point led. Undaunted, NMMI freshman quarterback JJ Dorsch, taking over for an injured Ryan Perez, led the Broncos into the end-zone in 5 just plays, capped by a 6 yard strike, in traffic, to wide reciever Darien Crawford at the back of the end zone for the game winning TD.

Top rusher for NMMI was #34 Anthony Williams with 1 TD and 58 net yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Joel Lira had 2 rushing TDs and 27 yards on 7 carries, while quarterback JJ Dorsch was 10 for 24 with 161 yards passing, one INT and one TD pass.

The win keeps the Broncos undefeated in WSFL conference play at 2-0, while the Bears drop to 2-1. Next week the Broncs travel to Ephraim, Utah to take on conference foe Snow College, ranked 2nd in the nation as of last week's NJCAA poll.
