NMMI Downs Pima in WSFL Opener

NMMI Sports Press: 29Sep08

The New Mexico Military Institute (3-1) finished up a four game road trip with a 50-12 victory over the Pima Aztecs (0-4) in Tucson, AZ last Saturday, Sept. 27th.  The Broncos started the scoring onslaught with their defense,  as NMMI defensive end Eljae Fagaoli sacked Pima quarterback Frank Gonzales in the end zone for the safety with only 2 minutes 30 seconds expired in the 1st quarter.

The Institute began 2008 conference play in the tough Western States Football League by dominating all three aspects of the game versus Pima. On offense they racked up 450 total yards: 249 rushing and 201 passing. On defense they allowed the Aztecs just 162 total yards, including only 1 yard rushing in 31 attempts.  On special teams, wide reciever Vincent Santana returned one punt 42 yards for a touchdown, while punter/linebacker Matt Kalisch had two punts inside the Pima 10 yard line, the first of which set up Fagaoli's safety.

Next week will be also be a WSFL conference game, and the Broncos first home game of the season. They face off  against the Bears from Phoenix College (3-1) back at NMMI's Colt Field on Saturday, Oct. 4th at 7:00pm.

The Broncos played Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ at the Tucson Magnet High School Stadium, an artificial turf field.
