Broncos Upset Odessa in OT Thriller

Roswell, NM -- The
Broncos picked up their first conference win of the season with a
stunning 94-90 overtime victory over Odessa College. In an earlier
meeting between the two teams, Odessa handed NMMI a 100-47 loss.
This time, on their home court, the Broncos put together a complete game
to take the victory.
The Broncos
built a 10 point lead at the half and eventually got it to 11 points
with 15 minutes remaining in the game. A series of turnovers
forced by the Odessa press allowed them to cut the deficit and take the
74-73 lead with 2:35 remaining in the game.
Byron Byrd
took over from there, nailing back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the
Broncos the 79-76 lead with 0:52 remaining in the game. Javon
James was fouled as he was going up for a sure dunk. He made one
of his free throws to extend the lead to 80-76 with 0:25 remaining.
Odessa
answered with a 3-pointer making it 80-79. Marcus Smith was fouled
and made both of his shots to increase the lead to 82-79. On the
inbounds, Odessa managed to race down the court hit a three to tie the
game at 82-82 with only a second remaining on the clock.
In overtime,
Taichien Dickerson came up big for the Broncos with a 3-pointer to give
the Broncos the 89-84 lead. Smith was able to seal the deal for
the Broncos with two free throws as NMMI went on to win 94-90.
Byrd led all
scorers with 28 points, Dickerson added 19, Brandon Rogers 12 and Smith
10. With the win, the Broncos snap an 11-game losing streak.
Their record now stands at 6-15 and 1-9 in the WJCAC.
