Go 1-3 in Opening Weekend

Mesa, AZ -- The college
baseball season opened this weekend for NMMI with a 1-3 showing against
Glendale Community College and Mesa Community College in Arizona.
The Broncos dropped the first game of the season to Glendale 6-1.
Freshman pitcher Gary States pitched 5 complete innings giving up only 2
earned runs but took the loss. In game two, sophomore Ismael Solis
pitched 6 2/3 innings before giving up the winning run in the bottom of
the seventh with two outs, 3-2 Glendale. The Broncos offense
struggled in the first two games of the season, only managing 8 hits.
On Saturday, the
Broncos played Mesa Community College who was coming off of a NJCAA
Division II World Series appearance in 2006. Sergio Marquez
pitched a complete game 3-hitter while only allowing 2 runs in NMMI's
3-2 victory. Brian Bustos hit a home run in the top of the sixth
to give the Broncos the lead. Chris Bartenhagen added 2 rbi for
the Broncos. Gabe Arellano took the loss for the Broncos in game
two as Mesa earned a split with a 7-4 victory.
The Broncos will travel
back to Arizona next weekend to play Eastern Arizona College in a four
game series.
